What Does the Examiner Ask? Vehicle Check Driving Test


1. Check Under the Bonnet

1. Coolant
Keeps the engine cool.
Check the minimum marking when the engine is cold.
Refill yourself if necessary.

2. Windscreen washer fluid
Keeps the windows clean.
Refill yourself; use antifreeze in winter.
A dashboard light warns when the level is low.

3. Engine oil (dipstick)
Check when the engine is cold and the car is on level ground.
Remove the dipstick, clean it, reinsert it, take it out again, and read the level (should be between minimum and maximum).

4. Topping up engine oil
Pour in engine oil and check again with the dipstick.

5. Brake fluid
Ensures proper pressure in the braking system.
Only a garage is allowed to refill it.

6. Battery
Provides power to start the engine.


2. What must you check on the tyres?

1. Tyre pressure
Must be sufficient.
You can find the correct value on the driver’s door or inside the fuel cap.

2. Tread depth
Minimum 1.6 mm (summer tyres) and 4 mm (winter tyres).

3. Valve cap
Must be present to keep dirt out and prevent air leaks.

4. Damage and flat tyres
Check for damage such as nails, cracks, wear, or ageing.


3. Checks inside the car (dashboard and controls)

Rear window heater

Front window heater

Warning lights
Red = stop immediately.
Orange = check required.

Windscreen wipers
Lever with different speeds.

Mirrors and seat
Correct distance, upright backrest, and good visibility.


4. Lights

Indicators
Lever up/down.

Side lights, dipped beam, and high beam
Via the rotary switch and lever.

Fog lights
Separate button; indicator light illuminates when activated.

Brake lights
Have someone check them or check via reflection.


5. Ventilation and air conditioning

Air conditioning
Press the “A/C” button.

Misted windows
Set ventilation to windscreen position, switch on the blower, and use air conditioning if necessary.
